Snowboarding in July

It was time for our second adventure on the south island and as the NZ winter sport season starts in July, it went snowboarding in Queenstown and Wanaka. This time we traveled with a full packed car with Reese, Roderick, Mike, Mary and I. 12 hour drive here we come.

Apparently Fergburger in Queenstown is the most famous Burger place in NZ and it was just down the road from the hostel we were staying. Highly recommended, it is famous for a reason!  The next day we got a bus at 8 am up to the Remarkables. It was a great day, it is definitely the skiing area with the best view.

The Coronet Peak was our second destination. It was an awesome day again, great snow and we found another awesome view point at a weather station above the lift. Back in town, we had to go to Ferg’s for a second burger… this time I got the the one with pork belly. It was insanely good.

Day 3 and went up to Wanaka for a change to check out another skiing area, the Treble Cone. On the way there we stopped at the Kawarau Bridge, which was the first the commercial bundgy site in the world and is still operating. Nobody jumped down though. In Wanaka, Mike, Mary and Reece decided to spend the day in town, so it was just Roderick and I going up Mountain. The slopes are great but quite challenging. The majority are black and red runs and a few of them are unprepared with a backcountry feel. There are just a few lifts, but the rides are quite long. Combining the rides makes it possible to go on 25 minutes runs before you have to take a lift again. Also the view!

On our way back north, we stopped for a day at lake Tekapo. Got some delicious fresh salmon sashimi, stayed at the YHA right in front of the lake with a beautiful view and went to the hot pools right down the street. I took no pictures there, as my iPhone is not water resistance.
